Mrs Helen Burndred
Vascular Nurse Practitioner
Helen qualified as a nurse in 2002 at Keele University School of Nursing and Midwifery. Before joining Veincentre Helen worked in a variety of clinical settings including Surgery, A&E, Medical Assessment Unit and Outpatients. She developed a special interest in vein treatment while working with Dr West at the North Staffs Nuffield Hospital and joined Veincentre when we opened our new Stoke clinic in Jun 2012.
She then underwent a comprehensive training programme under the supervision of Dr West. This included extensive hands on training in all the techniques offered by Veincentre including foam sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy, EVLA and Clarivein. She has augmented this in-house training by visiting centres across the UK and in Europe to gain further experience in Ultrasound scanning and Clarivein treatment.
She now has extensive experience and expertise in both diagnostic ultrasound scanning and the performance of all venous interventional treatments and has already successfully undertaken over 500 ultrasound guided venous interventions.
Helen was shortlisted for the Nursing Times Surgical nurse of the year in 2016. Just pipped at the post, but so proud that she got through to the last 8 of all nurses in the UK. Plus we had a fabulous party at Grosvenor House hotel for the awards ceremony!
Her appointment to the role of Nurse Practitioner in Veincentre is pioneering in the field of Phlebology in the UK. Nurse practitioners are commonplace in other areas of medicine and their skills and abilities well recognised in specialties ranging from ophthalmology and cardiac surgery to general practice and acute hospital medicine. Nurse practitioners and doctors work together as a team. Whoever is actually undertaking the treatment the doctor is always supported by a nurse and the nurse always supported by a doctor. This team provides the safest and most effective means of providing quality vein treatment utilising the skills of both doctor and nurse in perfect harmony.
