What is the Difference Between Thread Veins and Varicose Veins?

Understanding Thread Veins and Varicose Veins

Thread veins (also known as spider veins) are fine red, purple, or blue veins that appear just beneath the surface of the skin, most commonly on the legs or face. These veins are medically known as telangiectasia and are usually harmless, but they can sometimes indicate an underlying issue, especially when accompanied by aching, heaviness or swelling.

Varicose veins, on the other hand, are larger and deeper veins that have become twisted or bulging due to faulty valves, causing blood to pool in the legs instead of flowing back up toward the heart. Over time, this leads to increased pressure in the veins and more noticeable symptoms like throbbing, fatigue, swelling, and skin changes.

Thread Veins vs Varicose Veins: What’s the Difference?

Thread veins are very small, surface-level veins that don’t typically cause pain, though they may cause itching or a burning sensation. Varicose veins are larger, often raised above the skin, and can lead to discomfort, skin discolouration and even leg ulcers if left untreated.

Do Thread Veins Become Varicose Veins?

Thread veins don’t necessarily lead to varicose veins, but both can develop from the same underlying problem, venous insufficiency, a common condition where the valves in the leg veins don’t function properly. Instead of pushing blood back up toward the heart, the weakened valves allow blood to flow backward and pool in the veins. This increases pressure in the blood vessels and can lead to both visible spider veins and bulging varicose veins. It’s also common for people to experience both spider and varicose veins at the same time, particularly if they’ve had long-standing circulation issues.

If you’re noticing new symptoms such as aching, swelling, or skin changes, especially alongside visible veins, it’s a good idea to have a consultation and a colour duplex ultrasound scan to check for any underlying problems. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent symptoms from worsening and improve both comfort and appearance.

Treatments at VeinCentre

At VeinCentre, we offer minimally invasive, walk-in, walk-out procedures with no need for general anaesthetic.

Microsclerotherapy is the most effective treatment for thread veins. A tiny needle is used to inject a solution into the vein, causing it to fade over time. For varicose veins, we offer Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), which treats the underlying issue in the larger veins. In some cases, additional treatments like foam sclerotherapy may be used to treat any remaining visible veins.
