Leg Ulcers Consultation

The vast majority of leg ulcers are caused by venous insufficiency; the same underlying cause of varicose veins.

We treat the cause of your vein problems, not just the symptoms.

Consultation Process

1. Discussion

The consultation will begin with a conversation with the consultant regarding your venous problems. They will take your past medical history including any previous bandaging or treatment you may have had and how effective it was.

2. Scan

The consultant will undertake a colour duplex ultrasound scan on your legs from your feet up to your groin. This scan is the only way to accurately identify whether there is a venous problem causing the ulcer. The scan is like a baby scan but on your legs and is undertaken with you standing up.

3. Tailored Treatment Plan

The consultant will then explain the results of the scan and what treatment options are suitable – including the benefits and the risks. You are encouraged to ask questions and ensure that any proposed treatment plan takes into consideration your preferences.

4. Cost

Our prices are upfront and fixed and so they will not escalate from what you can see here. The consultant will be able to discuss the prices for the treatment plan you require. The treatment quote will be confirmed in writing alongside your consultation report.

5. Further Queries & Booking

Our results of the consultation and scan are valid for 6 months, however our policy for patients with leg ulcers and/or active bleeding is to ensure we can consult you within a week and treat you within two. If you’re keen to be seen quickly, please let us know and we’ll be sure to fit you in with one of our specialists.

Prior to and following consultation, our patient advisers are also available to answer any further questions you may have or to clarify anything in the consultant report or treatment quote.

What is a Colour Duplex Ultrasound Scan?

A colour duplex ultrasound scan is a painless, quick and non-invasive test. It is akin to a baby scan (but on your legs). The scan accurately maps the anatomy (what the veins look like) and the physiology (how they are working e.g. direction of blood flow).

The scan will reveal if there is reflux (reverse blood flow) in any of the veins underlying the skin. If so, this indicates the veins contain faulty valves. When working properly the valves ensure blood flows back up the veins to the heart. If the valves are faulty, blood flows back down the leg (reflux) which causes increased pressure of blood in the leg veins. This damages the skin which then eventually breaks down resulting in a leg ulcer.

Consultation Cost

An initial consultation with one of our Consultant Vascular Specialists costs £250 and includes the Colour Duplex Ultrasound Scan of your legs.
