What is Microsclerotherapy?

Microsclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for leg thread veins, where a diluted solution (known as a sclerosant) is carefully injected into the affected veins. This encourages the vein walls to stick together and close, allowing the body to gradually absorb them over time.

With careful technique and a tailored approach, most patients experience excellent results. However, it’s worth noting that thread veins can sometimes be more stubborn than larger varicose veins and may take a little longer to fully fade. Our experienced Vascular Consultants will guide you through the process and let you know what to expect at every stage.

How does the Microsclerotherapy Treatment Work?

The VeinCentre Consultation

Your journey starts with a consultation, where we take the time to listen carefully and understand your symptoms. You’ll meet with your dedicated Vascular Consultant, who will review your medical history, address any concerns, perform a detailed colour duplex ultrasound scan, and explain your personalised treatment plan. The same Consultant you see at your initial appointment will also carry out your treatment, ensuring consistent, continuous care from beginning to end.

The Procedure

At the start of the procedure, your Consultant will talk you through everything once more to ensure you feel confident and fully informed. Microsclerotherapy works by injecting a specially formulated sclerosant solution directly into the visible thread veins. Over time, your body naturally absorbs the collapsed vein, improving the appearance of the skin.

As the solution is injected, the veins may fade briefly before becoming more noticeable again, which is a normal part of the process. They can look slightly red for a few days or weeks as they break down, and final results appear gradually over time.

The treatment uses a series of very small injections and may cause only a light stinging or mild, short-lived discomfort. Most appointments take just 30 to 45 minutes.

Post-Procedure

After your treatment, the nurse will help you put on compression stockings (or two if both legs have been treated). We recommend wearing this for seven days to aid healing and improve your results. Your nurse will explain how to wear and care for your stockings and share personalised aftercare advice.

Before heading home, we’ll ask you to take a short 10-minute walk to support healthy circulation. We’ll also let you know what to expect over the following days and when to get in touch if you have any concerns.

With VeinCentre, you’re in expert hands every step of the way.

What are the Microsclerotherapy Treatment Risks?

Like any medical procedure, microsclerotherapy carries some potential risks. At VeinCentre, we’re committed to ensuring you feel fully informed before proceeding with treatment. Your Vascular Consultant will talk you through everything during your consultation and answer any questions you may have.

Side effects are typically mild and short-lived. These may include temporary redness, bruising, or itching at the injection site. In some cases, small brown marks (hyperpigmentation) can appear, which usually fade over time. Very rarely, small areas of skin breakdown or allergic reactions may occur.

We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions to support your recovery and reduce the likelihood of side effects. If you ever have any concerns during your treatment journey, our team is always here to help.

Microsclerotherapy Treatment Aftercare

After your microsclerotherapy treatment, you’ll be asked to wear compression stockings for one week. This helps support your veins during the healing process and promotes the best possible results. While it means avoiding swimming for a short time, it shouldn’t limit your everyday movement.

It’s common to experience some bruising in the treated area. This varies depending on how many veins were treated and the size of the area, but it usually fades in the days and weeks following your appointment.

You can drive on the same day and return to your usual activities straight away. We do recommend taking a 20-minute walk daily, as gentle movement supports healthy circulation and healing. If there’s anything specific we think you should avoid, your Vascular Consultant will talk you through this before you leave. Our team is always on hand if you need further guidance.
