The Connection Between Weight Loss & Varicose Veins

Varicose veins affect around one in three adults and can cause symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling and discomfort in the legs. While factors such as genetics and age can play a role, maintaining a healthy weight is also important for supporting good vein health and circulation.
Many people find that their legs feel more comfortable after losing weight, while others notice their veins becoming more visible. Understanding the connection between weight loss and varicose veins can help explain why this happens and when treatment may still be needed.
How Does Weight Affect Varicose Veins?
Healthy circulation plays an important role in keeping the veins in your legs working efficiently. The veins rely on small one-way valves to help blood flow back towards the heart, working against gravity throughout the day.
Maintaining a healthy weight can help support this process by reducing the strain placed on the veins and promoting better blood flow. When additional pressure builds up within the leg veins over time, the valves can become less effective, allowing blood to collect within the vein and contribute to the development or progression of varicose veins.
Dr Mark Regi explains:
“Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce pressure within the veins of the legs and support healthy circulation. This may help reduce symptoms and support overall vein health.”
Can Weight Loss Improve Varicose Veins?
For people who are overweight, losing weight can have a positive impact on vein health and may help improve symptoms associated with varicose veins.
By reducing pressure on the veins, weight loss may help to:
– Improve circulation
– Reduce swelling in the legs and ankles
– Ease aching and heaviness
– Improve comfort when standing for long periods
– Support overall vascular health
Dr Regi explains:
“Losing weight can alleviate some of the pressure on your legs, sometimes reducing the impact of symptoms.”
While weight loss can help improve how your legs feel, it is important to remember that it cannot repair damaged vein valves.
Varicose Veins Before and After Weight Loss
Many patients notice a change in the appearance of their legs before and after weight loss. In some cases, veins that were previously difficult to see become much more noticeable.
This can sometimes lead people to believe they have suddenly developed varicose veins when, in reality, the veins were already present.
Dr Regi explains:
“The medication itself does not cause varicose veins, but weight loss can make existing veins much more visible. When someone loses a significant amount of weight, particularly quickly, they lose some of the layer of fat that sits under the skin. That can make veins that were already enlarged or under pressure more prominent.”
Varicose Veins After Weight Loss: Why Are They More Visible?
Many people are surprised to notice varicose veins after weight loss and assume they have developed a new vein problem.
In reality, weight loss often reveals veins that were already present. As the layer of fat beneath the skin reduces, enlarged veins can become easier to see.
Dr Regi explains:
“What we’re often seeing is not new varicose veins appearing overnight, but veins that were already present becoming easier to see. The weight loss can essentially reveal a condition that was previously hidden beneath a thicker layer of fatty tissue.”
While weight loss can reduce pressure on the veins and improve symptoms such as aching, heaviness and swelling, it cannot repair faulty vein valves. This means that existing varicose veins are unlikely to disappear completely without treatment.
Although more visible veins can sometimes come as a surprise, they are not usually a cause for concern in themselves. However, if they are causing symptoms or affecting your quality of life, it may be worth seeking advice.
Mounjaro and Varicose Veins
With the growing popularity of medications such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and semaglutide, many people have been searching for information about Mounjaro and varicose veins.
Current evidence suggests that Mounjaro does not cause varicose veins. However, because these medications can lead to significant weight loss, existing veins may become more noticeable as body fat reduces.
Dr Regi explains:
“For some people, this is the first time they may notice they have an underlying vein problem.”
If you’ve noticed veins becoming more visible while losing weight, it’s worth remembering that the medication is not creating the veins. Instead, it may simply be revealing veins that were already there.
When Should You Seek Treatment?
Varicose veins are extremely common, affecting around one in three adults. While some people are concerned about their appearance, others experience symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling and discomfort.
Dr Regi advises:
“If the veins are bulging, uncomfortable, swelling and disrupting your daily life, it’s worth seeking medical advice. The earlier vein problems are identified, the easier they are to manage.”
