What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most commonly appear on the legs and feet. They develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly, causing blood to flow in the wrong direction and collect within the vein. Over time, this increased pressure causes the veins to enlarge and become more visible beneath the skin.
For many people, varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic concern. They can also cause uncomfortable symptoms that affect day-to-day life, including aching, heaviness, itching and swelling.
Why Do You Get Varicose Veins?
One of the most common questions people ask is: “Why do you get varicose veins?”
Varicose veins develop when the valves inside the veins weaken or become damaged. Healthy veins contain one-way valves that help blood travel upwards towards the heart. When these valves stop functioning properly, blood can begin to pool inside the vein, increasing pressure and stretching the vein walls.
This is known as venous insufficiency and is the underlying cause of most varicose veins.
Several factors can increase your likelihood of developing varicose veins, including:
• Genetics or family history
• Pregnancy
• Hormonal changes
• Ageing
• Prolonged standing or sitting
• Being overweight
• Lack of movement or exercise
While anyone can develop varicose veins, they are particularly common in people with a family history of vein problems.
What are Varicose Veins Caused By?
Varicose veins are caused by increased pressure within the superficial veins of the legs. Over time, this pressure damages the vein walls and valves, allowing blood to collect instead of flowing efficiently back to the heart.
The leg veins work against gravity every day, which is why varicose veins most commonly appear in the legs rather than elsewhere in the body.
Certain occupations that involve standing for long periods, such as retail, nursing or hairdressing can also place additional strain on the veins.
Common Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Some people may not experience symptoms but might feel self-conscious about the appearance of their legs. However, for those who do experience symptoms, they can vary widely. The sensation of varicose veins varies between individuals.
Common symptoms include:
- Aching, heavy, or throbbing legs.
- Tired and ‘restless’ legs.
- Itching or burning sensation around the affected area.
- Muscle cramping or swelling in the lower legs.
- Discomfort that worsens after standing or sitting for long periods.
Do Varicose Veins Go Away on Their Own?
Unfortunately, varicose veins do not usually disappear without treatment. While lifestyle changes such as exercise, leg elevation and compression stockings may help manage symptoms, they do not fix the underlying vein problem.
Without treatment, some varicose veins may gradually worsen over time.
What Happens If Varicose Veins Are Left Untreated?
For some people, varicose veins remain relatively stable. For others, symptoms may become more noticeable over time.
Untreated varicose veins can sometimes lead to:
• Increasing discomfort or swelling
• Skin discolouration or eczema
• Bleeding from the veins
• Superficial thrombophlebitis
• Venous leg ulcers in more advanced cases
The good news is that modern treatments are highly effective and minimally invasive.
Modern Treatment for Varicose Veins
At VeinCentre, we specialise in walk-in, walk-out procedures designed to treat the underlying cause of varicose veins with minimal disruption to your life.
The most common treatment is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), which uses laser energy to close the faulty vein and redirect blood flow through healthier veins.
Depending on your veins, treatment may also include:
• Foam sclerotherapy
• Avulsions
• Microsclerotherapy for smaller veins
Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities very quickly following treatment.
