Joel’s Varicose Vein Treatment Journey
Joel Dommett, Comedian and TV personality, had been living with varicose veins for years before deciding to seek treatment. With a family history of the condition, it developed gradually, becoming more noticeable around his ankles, where swelling and visible veins began to change the shape of his legs.
At first, it was something he could ignore, but over time it started to affect his confidence, as he admits he “became a bit more self-conscious about it.”
During lockdown, Joel became more aware of the changes, and when cramping began in one leg, it was clear the issue was progressing beyond appearance. He recognised it was “going to become more of an issue down the line, not just aesthetic.”
Following treatment, Joel has seen a real transformation, with his legs now looking and feeling completely different.
What Surprised Joel about Treatment?
After looking into his options, Joel was recommended to VeinCentre by This Morning’s doctor Zoe Williams, a recommendation that gave him the confidence to take the next step.
At his consultation, a detailed ultrasound scan revealed the root cause of the problem. As is often the case with varicose veins, what you see on the surface isn’t always where the issue begins.
For Joel, one of the biggest surprises was just how straightforward the treatment was.
“I thought it was going to be a much bigger operation, but it’s actually pretty simple.”
On the day, the experience was far more relaxed than he had expected. The team at Richmond VeinCentre made him feel at ease throughout, and the procedure itself was quick and manageable. He was surprised that “You literally just walk out afterwards.”
Life after Treatment
Just a short 6 weeks after treatment, Joel began to notice a real difference. The visible veins had reduced significantly, and his legs looked more even. But just as importantly, the symptoms he’d been experiencing disappeared. Stating “I’ve had no cramps at all.”
As someone who runs regularly, Joel also noticed improvements in how his legs felt during and after exercise. He says “My legs feel lighter… it feels more balanced.”
Recovery felt easier, and the heaviness he’d previously experienced was gone, making everyday activity feel more comfortable again.
Joel’s Advice
Looking back, Joel’s only regret is not doing it sooner. “If it’s something that’s going to get worse, get it done as early as possible.”
Like many people, he realised that varicose veins don’t improve on their own, and waiting can often mean symptoms become more noticeable over time.
Now, with his legs feeling better than they have in years, Joel has a renewed sense of confidence. “It just gives you so much more confidence.”
And as for what’s next? He says: “I’ll be in hot pants this summer.”
